Shaving Irritation – How to Prevent and Treat It

dealing with shaving irritationShaving irritation can occur in many different circumstances and can take up many different forms. The skin is a sensitive organ that can react differently to a shave, depending on the type of razor you’re using. Some people experience skin irritation after using manual razor blades. Others can’t stand electric razors. But generally there are certain aspects, that taken care of, will prevent irritation after shaving.

 Commit to good habits

  • Always shave after a warm bath or shower. The warm water will open your pores and soften the hairs. Consequently the hairs are easier to cut.
  • Exfoliate before shaving. Through exfoliation your skin will have less impurities making a closer shave possible.
  • Use a moisturizer. It will keep your skin’s hydration level well balanced.
  • Shave in you hair-growth direction.
  • Use short, light strokes until you cover the entire area.
  • Rinse with cold water pat dry with a soft towel. The cold water will close your pores and tighten your skin.

 Use the right shaving products

  • Get a new razor. If you use a dull manual blade, you put yourself at high risk of causing yourself skin irritation and razor burn. If you stick with using a manual razor, I suggest you change it after few shaves. But I recommend switching to an electric razor. It comes with so many advantages, that you can’t lose trying one out.
  • Acquire a badger brush. You may think that shaving cream is enough, but a shaving brush will help you evenly lather up, which will ultimately result in a much smoother and closer shave without irritation.
  • Use shaving cream specially designed for sensitive skin. Allow it to stay for at least 3 minutes on your skin before shaving. This way the hairs are softer and the shave will be smoother.
  • After shaving, use some lotion. It will reduce the impact of dry skin after shaving, which is one of the causes for shaving irritation symptoms.
